With most of the soccer world’s attention rightfully directed at the World Cup, MLS fans prepare for their given team’s return to action this week.

The Revolution will meet the arch rival Chicago Fire at Gillette Stadium Sunday night in its first match back from the World Cup break. In MLS play, the Revs pulled into the break 40% of the way through the season with an ugly 3-7-2 (11 points) record and were completely dreadful in an ugly 3-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders back on June 5. Since, the Revs also lost 3-0 in exhibition against Cruzeiro.

Following Preston Burpo‘s suffering a season-ending leg injury Saturday night, Bobby Shuttleworth was forced suddenly into action against Red Bull New York. For the 23-year-old, the match marked his MLS debut. Shuttleworth had started the Revs’ US Open Qualifying match two and a half weeks earlier, which they lost 3-0 to the same Red Bull club, but had never seen the field in league play.

Shuttleworth would record the win while making the saves he was supposed to make over the match’s final 50+ minutes. While New England eagerly anticipates Matt Reis‘s return from offseason surgery, in the absence of both he and Burpo, Shuttleworth will be drawing at least one start as he’ll be in net this Saturday night against Seattle.

With Preston Burpo's season all but over, Matt Reis's return becomes a focal point.

Just moments before Preston Burpo suffered what’s been termed by the Revolution as a lower leg fracture while aggressively defending his net from New York’s Dane Richards, the Revolution’s broadcast booth was gushing with praise for the keeper.

“To me, he’s the MVP so far,” said color analyst Jay Heaps.

Heaps and Brad Feldman supplemented their praise with speculation. Burpo, acquired alongside Cory Gibbs over the winter in a trade with the Colorado Rapids, was brought on-board to fill in while the New England’s long-time star keeper Matt Reis recovered from two offseason surgeries.
