With Preston Burpo's season all but over, Matt Reis's return becomes a focal point.

by Adam Vaccaro

Just moments before Preston Burpo suffered what’s been termed by the Revolution as a lower leg fracture while aggressively defending his net from New York’s Dane Richards, the Revolution’s broadcast booth was gushing with praise for the keeper.

“To me, he’s the MVP so far,” said color analyst Jay Heaps.

Heaps and Brad Feldman supplemented their praise with speculation. Burpo, acquired alongside Cory Gibbs over the winter in a trade with the Colorado Rapids, was brought on-board to fill in while the New England’s long-time star keeper Matt Reis recovered from two offseason surgeries.

It was an unusual week for the Revolution, from Monday’s big-news beginning to the very tense match that closed it out.  Let’s run through it real quick, story by story.

The Revs’ tumultuous week got started almost immediately following the club’s 2-1 loss to the Colorado Rapids last Saturday night.  Before lunchtime on Monday, it was announced that captain Shalrie Joseph was taking an indefinite leave of absence from the club.  Speculation ran rampant immediately as reasons for the leave were not — and of yet, have not — been announced, but very early Wednesday morning, Frank Dell’Apa reported for Boston.com that the midfielder had left to take part in MLS’s substance abuse and behavioral health program.  We still have no further information and the club has not commented on this report, but Joseph’s teammates have acknowledged that he has problems to deal with, essentially verifying a very respected journalist’s report.

The Revolution take on the Colorado Rapids tomorrow night at 7:30 PM.  In preparation, here are some solid links from this past week to whet your appetite.

Jeff Lemieux and RevolutionSoccer.net, of course, have done good work this week.  Lemieux profiled Marko Perovic on Tuesday and considered the importance of the forthcoming three game homestand yesterday.  Cory Gibbs and Darrius Barnes discussed their strategy for slowing down the Rapids’ attack earlier today.  Also today, Lemieux posted this week’s match preview.

Kyle McCarthy discussed Edgaras Jankauskas‘s possible season debut.  Earlier today, he also lamented that we may not get to see former teammates Shalrie Joseph and Jeff Larentowicz match up against one another.  The meeting might have to wait until September 18 in Colorado if Joseph can’t go.

Excuse the irony of the headline; an exhibition will always be just that: an exhibition.  All the same, a soccer superpower may be on its way to Gillette and much fanfare would be sure to follow.

Benfica is a 31-time champion of its home country.

Frank Dell’Apa reported yesterday that the Revolution and Portugal’s SL Benfica are in negotiations to book a May 19 exhibition match in New England.  Benfica has played in Foxborough before but never in Gillette.  When it has been in the area, though, it has drawn quite a crowd.

The Revs will be without captain Shalrie Joseph this weekend.

Kyle McCarthy reports for MLSsoccer.com that Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph will not play in Saturday night’s match in San Jose against the Earthquakes.  Despite being listed as probable on Tuesday’s injury report, the captain will be sidelined by the same hip flexor injury that already cost him the season’s first two contests.

We’re about twenty-four hours removed from the Revolution’s thrashing of Toronto FC, partially made possible by Zack Schilawski‘s breakout hat trick.  In internet time, this is about twenty-three years, so we can now provide you with a bounty of links.  Next week we’ll be starting our own recaps but for now, enjoy the exterior sources.
