The Revolution will return to training Tuesday, the day before its anticipated international friendly against SL Benfica.  Though the match will have no effect on New England’s 2010 MLS campaign, you have to think a win would be a big confidence boost for the club, currently mired in a 7 game winless streak (0-5-2 since April 10).  It should also be a treat for the Gillette faithful, many of whom will be coming just to see the 2009-10 Portuguese Liga champions and to get a taste of international soccer.

The Revolution announced today that the club will host Brazil’s Cruzeiro Esporte Clube on Sunday, June 13, at Gillette Stadium.  This will be the Revs’ second international friendly in less than a month, as they will also play host to Portugal’s SL Benfica on May 19.

Cruzeiro may have a better chance of drawing a crowd than does Benfica given the heavy Brazilian population in New England.  On the other hand, it is curiously scheduled in the first week of the World Cup.  We’ll see which of these two factors has more of an effect on attendance.

Updating news from earlier this week, the Revs will indeed host Portugal’s SL Benfica at Gillette Stadium in exhibition play on May 19.

The match’s merits can and will be debated, but it will certainly draw a crowd.

The club is excited to bring one of Europe’s powerhouses into town:

Excuse the irony of the headline; an exhibition will always be just that: an exhibition.  All the same, a soccer superpower may be on its way to Gillette and much fanfare would be sure to follow.

Benfica is a 31-time champion of its home country.

Frank Dell’Apa reported yesterday that the Revolution and Portugal’s SL Benfica are in negotiations to book a May 19 exhibition match in New England.  Benfica has played in Foxborough before but never in Gillette.  When it has been in the area, though, it has drawn quite a crowd.
