The Revolution released today’s injury report minutes ago and guess what? It’s grown.
Add Darrius Barnes to the list of hurting Revs.
Already without Taylor Twellman, Matt Reis, Shalrie Joseph, Emmanuel Osei, and Mike Videira, the club will miss Darrius Barnes this week as well. Barnes suffered a right foot sprain Saturday night against Columbus and was substituted out as a result.
New England will miss their talented second year defender, especially given that they may be without another of that ilk. Kevin Alston did not go against the Crew due to a hamstring issue and is listed as questionable this week. Also questionable are Edgaras Jankauskas, who did not play against Columbus, and Cory Gibbs. Gibbs is suffering from a quad strain; he was listed as probable going into Saturday’s match but played the whole game. His listing this week is a downgrade, and is not a good sign.
If the Revolution were to play without Barnes, Gibbs, Alston, and Osei, the only natural defender they’d have left to go who’s started a game this season would be rookie Seth Sinovic (Khano Smith filled in for Alston against Columbus but is a midfielder at heart). That is a rough prospect for a Revolution club that has already been decimated by injuries this season.
Then again, it’s likely for the best given their injury troubles that tomorrow night against the New York Red Bulls in US Open Cup play, the Revolution take it easy and let their guys get themselves together.
Given the 0-4-1 record the club has posted over the last month in league play, Saturday night’s match against the San Jose Earthquakes has to be considered a must-win. Hopefully for New England, Alston, Gibbs, and Barnes will find themselves feeling a bit better in time for that tilt at Gillette Stadium.
Update: Kyle McCarthy adds that Preston Burpo, not injured, did not travel to New Jersey with the Revolution. This indicates that the club probably isn’t going to go for broke tomorrow night, not that many expected they would. Hopefully this allows for some recovery for the many walking wounded.
Writes McCarthy:
Burpo didn’t travel – he’s fine, but he was left at home.
